Hassan Diab said: “Four days have passed since Beirut Port’s explosion. As I said, hours after the explosion, Lebanon was hit by a huge disaster. We are living under the weight of the disaster which has caused devastating effects, not only with regard to human losses, including martyrs and wounded, or with regard to material losses affecting homes, institut ions, shops and various sectors; but also in terms of lingering huge psychological effects on the Lebanese people. I promised the Lebanese that I would not accept that this disaster would pass without those responsible being held accountable. Today, I want to firmly assert that accountability would spare no one All those responsible for this disaster must undergo investigation, and answer people's questions before the judiciary’s one s. How come such a hazardous warehouse is kept since 2013 without any action being taken Isn’t it odd tha t the issue is not mentioned in any session of the Supreme Council of Defense, over a period of 7 years? Why did the materials remain for 7 years at the port in a warehouse that does not meet the specifications for storing this type of material? Who was benefiting from the s torage of the materials at the port? The investigation will reveal the facts, and it will not take too long; measures taken by the judiciary to-date are indicative of the seriousne ss of the investigation. It also shows that investigations will be brought to completion and will expand to include all those involved in this disaster that afflicted a deep wound and great pain to all the Lebanese. We are all agonizing . We are all hurting Handling the calamity that struck the country is a great responsibility. T he current situation can not be borne by one party alone. The country cannot tolerate political jockeying . The pain is too great, and everyone is required to leave their electoral accounts and populist discourse aside. Today, we need to shoulder our national responsibility. The country is experiencing a massive disaster, far be yond its ability to withstand We are going through a great calamity, and a very difficult stage. Still , over the course of 4 days, fa ke news was trying to cut-off aid to Lebanon! How come anyone with a minimum sense of patriotism and responsibility devotes all of his time to spread fake news? This is shameful Lebanon is in mourning; the people are aching ; the country is in need of every help and support, and the government thanks everyone who has stood by Lebanon ’s side during this difficult ordeal. We are not holding on to power. We are seeking a national solution that would save the country. We came into office amidst exceptional ci rcumstances, in the aftermath of October 17 Revolution that expressed the anger of the Lebanese towards the reality that they have been experiencing, marred with decades of corruption the subsequent explosion which happened 4 days ago is one of the results of this corruption. Corruption and mismanagement have brought us to the current disaster The government, with its ministerial statement, on the basi s of which it gained the Parliament’s confidence , complied with the demands of the revolution. We assumed responsibility and knew that the country was in a state of political, financial and administrative collapse. In reality, however, we can only get out of the country's structural crisis by holding early parliamentary elections to generate a new political class and a new parliament. Today, in light of the disaster we are experiencing , we are in need of joint solidarity so as to overcome this critical stage. I am aware of people's concerns and questions regarding the disaster ’s consequences and management As for the martyrs, nothing makes up for them. Unfortunately, we have all lost them, but their parents’, families and children ’s loss is definitely bigger . Families have lost their bread-winner; mothers and fathers have lost their children; children have beco me orphans... The magnitude of the disaster is greater than anyone could ever imagine There are wounded persons; some wounds will leave their mark forever Houses have been destroyed; others have collapsed or have been damaged. P eople became homeless There are people who have lost their assets; there are people who have lost their jobs and livelihood s We are in a state of emergency, not only at the level of the disaster and its management . The state of emergency is related to the fate and future of the country. Therefore, I invite all political parties to agree on the next stage. They don't have much time. I'm ready to shoulder the responsibility for two additional months until they agree. The implementation of structural reforms should not be impeded in order to save the country. On Monday, I will submit to the Council of Ministers a draft law for holding early parliamentary elections. Our tragedy is great, and dealing with it requires exceptional decisions. I think that the time has come to be bold in facing the facts as they are. The Lebanese will show no mercy to everyone who hinders the process of reforming the country. In all honesty, I entered office, guided by this spirit and these principles, and I support the aspirations of the Lebanese for change... May God bless the souls of our martyrs and heal our wounded God bless Lebanon ” External link
