Ernest Hemingway قال ( about الذي كان ) : "يمكنك أن تسحق رجلا لكن لا يمكنك أن تهزمه. ذات يوم كئيب لكنه كان مشهودا تجمع حولي طاقم المستشفى على نحو ما يفعل أطباء الطوارئ، وما هي إلا لحظات حتى أمسكوا بي فأحكموا القيود والأصفاد ثم انهمكوا في تقييد أطرافي الأربعة على نحو لم أستطع معه الحركة، وبكل العنف والقسوة أدخلوا أنبوبا مؤلما في أنفي، الأمر الذي أصابني بشيء من الاختناق والإغماء، ثم بدأ حلقي في الالتهاب وراحت آلامي تشتد في المريء والحنجرة، وحين أُفرغ الأنبوب في معدتي الخالية شعرت بالضبط وكأن جمرة من نار قد نزلت في جوفي بغتةً وعلى حين غرة راحوا بتعمُّد وقصد يدفعون الأنبوب داخل رئتيَّ ويفرغونه فيهما، ثم أعقبوا ذلك بقطرات من الماء ملأت رئتيَّ فشرقت وأخذني سعال شديد ثم اختناق شبه تام، عندها أحسست بأنني قد دخلت بالفعل في سكرات الموت، فجسمي تغير لونه وامتقع وجهي واضطربت أنفاسي، بينما راح العرق يتصبب غزيرا من كل خلية في جسدي وأعقب ذلك تقيؤ مريع. وبعد نصف الساعة على وجه التقريب اعتراني ضرب من التشوش المصحوب بآلام معوية رهيبة، مضى وقت فتمكنت من التنفس وأفقتُ، ثم شيئًا فشيئًا أخذت أشعر بقليل من النشاط يدب في أعضاء جسمي، ثم إنني ورغم الآلام المتصاعدة من المعدة طلبت منهم -وقد بدت وجوههم كالحة وقسوتهم بادية- أن ينزعوا عني القيد والأصفاد كي أصلي، غير أنهم رفضوا رفضا باتا متذرعين بحجج أمنية عديدة، منها أنني قد أقوم بعمل عنيف في حال نزعهم القيود والأصفاد عني، فما كان مني إلا أن سألتهم مستنكرًا " External link
