Rachael Maskell said ( about Shadow Chancellor ) : "The Chancellor has come very late to the table to extend relief for businesses, and as we are seeing many companies in York have started laying people off. The Shadow Chancellor has asked for economic security 40 times and on each of the occasions he replied, was told ‘no’, this was 20 times. “It’s clear that this support will assist some struggling businesses in York, but by no means all. York has a particularly high concentration of otherwise successful travel, leisure and hospitality companies that have been stopped in their tracks by this crisis. “These businesses not only provide vital jobs and services, they also support a huge network of other companies and play a vital role in drawing people to the city. The Government urgently needs to recognise their value and provide the support necessary play a huge role in drawing people to the city. Today’s announcement is far too little, far too late for too many of them. “This is why I am continuing to call for further targeted support for these viable businesses and organisations who for no fault of their own are still struggling. This includes charities who cannot trade or fundraise sufficiently to qualify for the Job Support Scheme" External link

Rachael Maskell said : “I am outraged that this shambolic Government led by Boris Johnson has held the people of this country in contempt by removing their Parliament’s right to scrutinise Government and hold it to account. "I am holding this People’s Parliament for the residents of York so they can speak and have their voices heard. I will then do everything possible to take their views to the Prime Minister. "We must all pledge to work together and do whatever is necessary to ensure that people do not lose their democratic rights". She urged people to join her to 'stand up, be seen, be heard and let this Government know that we will not allow this constitutional crisis to continue.' Cllr Anna Perrett, Parliamentary Labour Candidate for York Outer said leaving the EU would affect generations of York residents and she urged anyone who cared about democracy to tell the PM he cannot ignore the MPs in Parliament who were elected to speak in our name. She also called on Julian Sturdy , the Conservative MP for York Outer, to state publicly his position on the suspension of Parliament. Meanwhile, Cllr Paul Doughty, the Tory group leader on City of York Council said he was '100 per cent' behind the Prime Minister. He said: "If anyone doubted that the LibDems, Labour, SNP, Greens, Plaid Cymru and the ‘Change/Ind’ or whatever they are called this week were not conspiring to stop any type of Brexit, they only have to look at their disgraceful meeting yesterday to prove it. "The ironic thing is the LibDems in their actions are backing the most potentially dangerous and economic damaging leadership team that this country has ever seen in Corbyn and McDonnell. Many would call their combined attempted actions to bring down a democratically Government a coup. "Boris promised to see through Brexit and that is what he and the Conservatives are doing. A pity too many parliamentarians have done nothing but frustrate the process since the democratic result in the referendum in 2016. "Let’s not forget more than 80 per cent of the electorate voted Conservative or Labour with ‘Leave’ as a manifesto promise the following year too. Corbyn has borrowed the LibDem trait of flipflopping ever since and it is entirely down to them if we leave with ‘No Deal.’ "It’s clear the Government are still open to dialogue with the EU and there is still time for the EU to come round from their intransigence. It was foolish for any MP to try to take ‘No Deal’ off the table as it is a significant bargaining tool. " There were signs Frau Merkel was softening in her approach when Boris met with her last week and the announcement today strengthens, if consent is granted, for the UK to secure the best deal possible. "If we leave with ‘No Deal’ there will still be plenty of prospect for negotiating the best trade arrangements after we leave as it is in the interest of most countries in the EU too” External link

"I know from talking to people on street stalls across the region that the mood of the public has changed. "Increasingly people are realising that we were misled by the Leave campaign over what Brexit would actually mean, in particular the negative consequences for the country. "Any deal would fall short of the deal we have at the moment with our EU partners.

Rachael Maskell said ( about Theresa May ) : “Brexit is the single most important decision that will happen to our country in decades, I will not sit back and watch our country destroy itself and take our rights away. In the circumstances it is entirely reasonable for MPs to go back to the public and say, would you like to proceed with the deal Theresa May proposes or would you prefer to keep the deal we’ve already got with the EU?” External link

Rachael Maskell added ( about Roger Gale ) : “Staff will be devastated to learn that the Post Office is closing and the city will be all the poorer for the loss of expertise that we will see if any of the current staff do not transfer over". A Post Office spokesperson said the new Post Office service will be operated by WHSmith Ltd. There will be five serving positions and four self-service kiosks, the spokesperson said. Services will be available from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 3pm on Sundays. Roger Gale, network and sales director, said that the change would help to ensure the branch is commercially viable into the future and therefore protect Post Office services on which customers in the area depend. He said: "The Post Office is committed to keeping our services at the heart of communities which we know is hugely important to people. This change means we can continue to do that, into the future.
