At 90 and 91, they never had no children, they was very giving people.”The two lived in Winston-Salem. Currently, Ruth Calkins, who suffers from dementia, lives in a nearby nursing home.Because of increased state visitation policies, Wayne and his family were not able to share the news of Calkins’ passing with her in the most conducive of circumstances.“Had to tell my Aunt Ruth through a window over the phone that her husband had passed away. That was hard. That was very hard,” Wayne said. “I didn’t cry until she cried.”Speaking over a Facebook Messenger video call, Wayne explained the pain of seeing his family split during the outbreak was made worse by his own family’s health.“Me, my daughter and my son-in-law. Us three have tested positive,” he said, unsure of where they contracted the virus. He said they all exhibited symptoms before Culkins' passing.Wayne said he received positive COVID-19 test results Friday morning. He said it took 10 days for him to find out his diagnosis.“It’s a whole lot worse than the flu,” Wayne said of his symptoms. “Everywhere on your body hurts.”Wayne said Calkins recently decided to move into a nursing home for his own health reason but also to be reunited with his wife. A plan and dream now forever separated by a faceless, silent killer. As his family recovers, they simultaneously process and mourn the death of their loved one. Due to the current stay-at-home order, the family cannot hold a typical service, but they hope a memorial can take place in the coming months. “Please take it serious,” Wayne said, addressing those who may brush off the severity of the pandemic. “It killed my Uncle Richard at 90. Don’t let yourself be the next person”. On Tuesday, Forsyth County announced its first death related to COVID-19 as a patient in their early 90s with several underlying health conditions.
