Edgar Lungu said : “I don’t really know the exact words that would describe the woman we are bidding farewell to today. Maybe, I can describe her as a ‘force of nature’ and that’s the most apt description of her, I think. My aunt was brutally frank; she spoke her mind, yet never kept a grudge against anybody. So one time she may be ripping into someone if she is displeased with one’s conduct; the next time you realise she is back chatting with them and life goes on,” External link

Edgar Lungu said : “She was a happy woman. To many people, she was my aunt; yet to me, she was actually my mother. She was my father’s younger sister, and therefore, she meant a lot to me. She was always proud of us as her children and grandchildren and had many stories to tell us. There is so much we, as a family, and many people who knew her can learn from her; for example, her candidness. The only thing we can’t learn from her is how to live long. She was 92. The only one who knows the secret of long life is God. My mother’s death is truly a celebration of her life. She lived life to the fullest, and we can only thank God for giving us this gift. She was truly a gift from God,” “Let me conclude by thanking all of you who have managed to come here in Petauke. This is as it should be. We should meet in good times and bad times and build oneness together. Let us love one another. Let us remember that what divides us does not outweigh what brings us together. We are one under our national motto – one Zambia, one nation. I can only wish all of you God’s blessings as you go back to your various destinations” External link

Edgar Lungu said ( about Sir ) : “As I sometimes drive around the city at night, I see more and more areas in darkness due to load shedding because our dams that generate power do not have water. I have heard of people failing to leave or enter their homes because their electric gates have mal-functioned because of power failure. It saddens me and I fail to imagine people living in high-density areas having to walk in darkness to and from their workplaces. Surely, this poses a serious security risk on our people,” “I am aware, Mr Speaker, of some health facilities going without power for long periods of time and I begin to wonder how our health workers are looking after our patients without water and electricity. Sir, in view of the above, I am directing the Ministry of Energy from midnight tonight to prioritize power supply to hospitals and health centres. Further, the Ministry of Energy should prioritize energy supply to our water supply operations. This is a very serious matter that should not be taken lightly” External link

Edgar Lungu said : “We all seriously need to understand and begin to appreciate this in detail and stop pointing fingers at each other for failure to grow our economy at the desired pace. Climate change is real. My fellow countrymen and women, I would like you to fully understand that this not my problem alone or the problem of my government alone. This is nature but even if it is nature, we need to join hands and see what we can do about it together [and] no question about it,” External link

Edgar Lungu said : “I want to place emphasis on the need to dismantle these arrears while curbing further accumulation of arrears. My government has taken this very seriously and I have directed those tasked with the responsibility of managing this debt stock to ensure that stringent measures are actively implemented,” “Mr Speaker, our non-discretionary expenditure which comprises personal emoluments (PEs) and debt stands at 50.1 per cent and 40 per cent respectively, giving a total of 90.1 per cent of our annual budget. This leaves the discretionary amount to stand at 9.9 per cent of our annual budget. This Mr Speaker is an alarming ratio” External link

Edgar Lungu said : “It is cardinal that personnel emoluments must be reflective of service delivery to the Zambian people. I have observed that this is not the case. It is for this reason that I have directed Secretary to Cabinet to immediately clean-up the public service payroll to stop this hemorrhage today and not tomorrow,” External link

Therefore, my government’s decision to introduce irrigation schemes across the country would boost productivity in the agriculture sector thereby enhancing food security at household and national levels,” “In the 2018/2019 agriculture season, the country experienced prolonged dry spells, especially in the southern half of the country. Edgar Lungu told : “That law needs to be revisited it is just creating poison among us. So do you know anyone in that report who stole money or stole six Billion or whatever?…I’ve got it (the report), I had it before it was released, but which Minister was mentioned there? Tell me, one two three four five (beckoning to surrounding journalists) which minister was mentioned there? This is where the problem is, there is too much fertile ground for speculation,” External link

Edgar Lungu said : “As for me, I have got that report I’ve had it for a while. Before I went to the Copperbelt I took time to study the Principle Law- the Financial Intelligence Act, I looked at the Regulations. I think we have to sit down and agree and think through this thing. I know that what is happening over there is gossip, it is not helping us, it is not helping the Republic, and it is not helping all those well-meaning people who are stake holders. I can’t go public and say Politically Exposed Person did this and then I leave it to people to construct it –no. What I know is, is that; that law is very clear; it says that unit (FIC) will render their report to the Minister; the Minister will table it before parliament ; but Meanwhile as they go, they discover friends, they’ll say… there’s a fire there, the police will move in… there’s a fire there, the DEC will move… Anti Money Laundering unit, ZRA …That’s how come we have recovered some things for ZRA to follow through,” “But what we are seeing is fuelling gossip. I am telling you what the law says and what I know. What is happening is if I see a thief stealing, I go to the police and I say that man is stealing I suspect so, the police are supposed to move in and arrest him. If I see somebody doing corruption I will go to ACC, but I cannot go public and say it before I even tell the police; or I tell the police and the police don’t act; if the police don’t act or ACC don’t act I am supposed to query and say why are you not acting when I have already told you? So the law has to be revisited so that the FIC- if they see anything wrong, they tell the police, and if the police don’t act or the ACC don’t act, they follow it up and say ba police ta bauza (we’ve informed the police) about something wrong we’ve seen but they are not doing anything” External link

Gregory Chifire said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “I am at pains to reconcile the President’s speech with reality. Although I was not expecting much from his speech, but what our President delivered as a speech in Parliament is nothing but a joke. It is fit for presentation only at a comedy night. It lacked a sense of seriousness. If this is how Lungu will continue to handle serious national affairs then we better brace ourselves for even hasher times,” External link

Dora Siliya said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “Our friends in the opposition spend all their day trying to paint Zambia black as a way to get to State House. Even corruption can’t be an agenda to get to State House. Your solution to the people of Zambia is ‘PF is corrupt.’ It’s really becoming boring because we are doing the work. Anybody who has nothing to say just says ‘the PF is corrupt’ [or] ‘president Lungu is corrupt.’ We refuse to make the fight against corruption a joke because we know that corruption can erode the confidence in a country. We have said nobody is spared in this country, not even the office of the president. And I am happy that this time around, even the investigative wings have said ‘don’t waste our time if you have nothing better to say.’ If you look at the statistics at ACC, it shows that a lot of reports they get are just rumour mongering. It wastes money for the police to be chasing stories that are not true. Let real corruption be fought,” External link

Hakainde Hichilema stated ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “The story is the same wherever we went, people have no food and no safe and clean drinking water. We were on the ground assessing the situation and so far our findings are that we must take this hunger situation seriously. Just because Mr Edgar Lungu and his PF can afford a flight to Japan using public resources when mealie meal prices are unaffordable for the majority of our people, and generally the cost of living very high, does not mean all is well for our citizens,” “This is not a time for partisan politics and sectarian interests from all leaders across the political divide. We must be serious and put the lives of our people first before ours by ensuring no one dies from starvation out of the neglect of those who wish to withhold help for whatever reason. The possible loss of life due to starvation is completely avoidable as long as we all put our heads together to seek solutions to help those of our citizens that have been exposed to the hunger situation” External link

The Zambia Catholic Bishops, Council of Churches in Zambia and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia. We will talk to Mr Lungu if he stops joking because if we meet the two of us, then someone will spread lies about what we have not said. And you know that. So let the Church led us in a respectful and serious manner. We need to talk and restore the rule of law,” “The Zambian people, our people can’t continue to be led in poverty by the PF. Hakainde Hichilema said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “We have taken note of the remarks attributed to Mr. Edgar Lungu, as quoted in the ‘News Diggers while campaigning in Katuba constituency parliamentary by-election. To say we should have been building toilets for the residents of Katuba and other places where we have our MPs is not only unfortunate but also immature and belittling, not only to the people of that constituency but to all Zambian citizens. For us in the UPND, politics is a noble and sacred service, which we respectfully hold, and we think this is not the kind of discourse our citizens should be subjected to from all of us in political leadership in our country” External link

As UPND, we will stand, as we always have, with the people to demand Zambia’s money back. If you think you will shield these culprits until 2021, there is life after 2021. The Bembas say ‘umulandu taubola’. The Zambian people will one day demand what rightly belongs to them. I am sure Zambian people would want to one day respect you as a former President, but to earn this respect, we urge you to also respect them today by securing their resources and therefore their future. Hakainde Hichilema stated ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “In 2017, the country lost K4.5 billion through corruption, according to the FIC’s 2017 Trends Report. This has increased to K6.1 billion in 2018, meaning in two years, the PF Government has lost K10.6 billion, which is about US$1 billion through corruption…The President can save this country if only he can empower the law enforcement agencies and allow them to do their job of prosecuting the people that have looted the country and compelling them to return the money,” “We want to believe that President Lungu means well when he says he is committed to fighting corruption. And if he does, we want to challenge him to inform the nation what he has done to those who were cited in 2017 report for milking K4.5 billion off the country through corruption. How many successful prosecutions did Zambia record on his watch? Is Mr. Lungu letting these people go scot-free and yet still expect us to believe that he is fighting corruption? Mr. President, we are still waiting for your Executive action on the 2017 Trends Report, and we demand that those cited be compelled to bring back the K4.5 billion that they stole in 2017” External link

Tell me, one two three four five (beckoning to surrounding journalists) which minister was mentioned there?

Edgar Lungu said : “I have come so that I hear from the mine unions and all stakeholders on the operations in the mines. The reason is simple: people have cried. I saw women, some half naked, some mothers crying that they feel cheated by the mining companies, especially KCM and Mopani to some extent. This message is clear. I want to consult Chamber of Mines; I will be meeting them and mineworkers unions to find out what they think. I also have a position and my position is that enough is enough,” External link

Gregory Chifire said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “Our people are barely surviving. The man simply chooses to ignore all these challenges? He is a disaster. Imagine our beloved Edgar goes to heap the blame of his failure on climate change. This man is not serious. Bembas say, ‘uwawa, tabula akabepesho’ (a person who falls will always have an excuse),” External link

Hakainde Hichilema said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “Let me use this opportunity to declare an emergency and a disaster with regards to hunger in this Country. I will not wait for Lungu and the PF to dictate how we help our people. We shall not allow the situation to continue unabated” External link

Hakainde Hichilema said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “It is wrong for Lungu to refuse to declare the hunger situation in the country a national disaster when the majority of our people have resorted to eating unripe wild fruits. Just in Chibombo and Rufunsa districts, our people don’t have access to clean drinking water, health services and food,” External link

Paul Kagame said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “It is also a great pleasure to be back in Lusaka. Today is a happy occasion. This is the first Sub-Regional Centre to open its doors. The reason is very simple: the leadership and commitment of President Lungu and the Government of Zambia,” External link

Hakainde Hichilema said ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “We are ready and have always stated that we need serious talk. We have made it clear that let the three Church mother bodies lead this process. We need to rest the PF because they have reached saturation level. A party that is leading people to poverty! Thieves are living like rich people” External link

Hakainde Hichilema stated ( about Edgar Lungu ) : “If you are not willing to head this crusade, one day, the Zambian people will head an anti-corruption crusade against you. As it is now, Edgar Lungu is being viewed with contempt, and many would say he deserved it because he has exhibited a leadership weakness that a President should never show,” External link
