Mario Bowleg said ( about Peter Alexander ) : “His was a pioneering spirit that never diminished,” “The Bahamas Basketball Federation is humbled in paying homage to the life of Peter ‘Macaroni’ ‘Cud’ Gilcud. As he always reminded us, ‘there is no other like the ‘The Macaroni’.’ To not mention his engaging personality would certainly do injustice to the man basketball came to know. To point out that he held lofty, incredible ideals would adequately portray a dominant part of his personality. ‘The Macaroni’ was a basketball philanthropist and administrator. Many Bahamian athletes have benefited from his assistance in procuring scholarships in the USA; especially, to his beloved St. Greg’s. Likewise, was his will to support high school student-athletes to attend athletic camps and sports seminars abroad. The Bahamas Basketball Federation is proud of his involvement as an executive of the federation for many years; he unselfishly laid the cornerstone for many of the programs within our organization” External link

Mario Bowleg said ( about Peter Alexander ) : “The BBF has lost one of its favorite sons, but we will continue to celebrate his life and contributions with the exuberance that only he could portray,” “He was a sterling example to basketball players for he worked and labored himself into becoming a fine basketball product and a leader. The Bahamas Basketball Federation joins his Junkanoo family (Shell Saxons) and relatives in paying tribute to the life of Peter Gilcud with fanfare and joy. That is the way ‘Macaroni’ or ‘The Cud’ would have liked it. May his soul rest in peace” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “Indeed, the BBF has been following McPhee-McCuin’s career long before her current stewardship which began at Ole Miss in 2018-2019, particularly at Jacksonville University, in Jacksonville, Florida,” “There is no question of the Ole Miss Lady Rebels’ performance in the SEC this season. Mario Bowleg stated : “I think we struggled against the 2-3 zone even though we had put in an offense to combat that. I also thought, even when we decided to make a run or two, I thought we just had some poor calls by one particular official and that just killed us,” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “I think we just had some miscommunication in defense where they were able to get in transition and their three-point shooters to knock down some three-point shots. That would separate them from us. Even though, looking at the statistics, the rebounds seem to be fair. I think we allowed them to beat us on the offensive boards that allowed them to have too much second chance shots,” External link

They feel slighted and under-appreciated. I’m not too optimistic. I reached out to the director (Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture Timothy Munnings) and there is no answer that is favorable. This is why things much change. Also, we are still struggling with funds, and if we have to travel early, we will have to supply accommodations, provide meals, award stipends and hire transportation. In addition to the grant for the last window, we got an extra $20,000 but we spent in excess of $70,000 and we’re cash strapped. We’re looking for corporate sponsors to come through for us because I don’t know if the ministry will be willing to assist. Of course, it is more beneficial to come to The Bahamas because of proximity. Once the door is opened, who knows what can happen and we may not have the opportunity to close it back,” “The cost for us to host would have been more beneficial for this country moving forward to not only jumpstart our economy but to keep people wanting to come to The Bahamas and keep these events in The Bahamas. Mario Bowleg said : “The coaching staff has already started discussing the possibility of who is available based on where these players are located around the world,” “In the European league, because of COVID-19, they will not be able to be released and that is not only affecting us, it is also affecting Puerto Rico and the strength of their team. There are a lot of players who just finished college ball or pro ball who are still in the US. We have discovered that some, since the pandemic, did not go back and sign with their teams and there a few home also. Mario Bowleg said : “This shows that FIBA has moved to the next level. The new format allows countries to see their national teams play against the best players on this side of the world as it should be,” “This has taken basketball to the next level. It’s going to be tough for us in The Bahamas but we’re just going to have to find a way to get the job done. We will do our endeavor best to ensure that in each window, we are able to put forward the best team that is possible, to give us the best opportunity to win. That’s all that we could do. Nothing is impossible. We strongly believe that if we bring our best team in each window, we will have a chance, and if the games are close, we could pull off an upset against Mexico, Puerto Rico or even the United States” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “We need our national teams to get in the work that they need,” “With a lot of our teams in the past, after the second or third games of competition, we just start playing competitively. That’s the chemistry kicking in. For that reason, I made it mandatory that all of our national teams have a minimum of five scrimmage games before they leave for competition so that coaches could see what the players could do, including their strengths and weaknesses and how they react to different sets which is very important. If they could get out of the gates properly, I could see this team qualifying” External link

Mario Bowleg said ( about Buddy Hield ) : “Chris DeMarco is one of the upcoming aspiring coaches who I think will definitely become a head coach in the coming years in the NBA. Our relationship started over a year ago when I was introduced to him through Buddy – he and Buddy are good friends,” “Chris DeMarco had interest in wanting to help the Bahamas Basketball Federation. Last year, being the head coach of the national team in the world cup qualifiers in the summer, he was able to assist me. Right away, I was able to see that Chris DeMarco had brought some aspects of the game that were beneficial to the country, players, myself and the coaching staff, that would make all of us better. It was not something to hesitate or think about. The man has the skills that are necessary to move us to the next level. From that point on, the relationship with myself, the other coaches and the players is what made it easier for us to make that decision to bring him on board” External link

Mario Bowleg explained : “FIBA has moved closer to us. There are frequent trips to The Bahamas because they see the potential in what we have to do, they like our administration and professionalism that we have. Our administration has a passion for basketball and one thing they said is that we do have a passion and love for the game and they can see we want to do some things that will move basketball to the next level and what they just want to do is help us. It’s up to us to lend our hand to receive the help that they want to give to us,” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “I think we will move on, taking nothing from Antigua, Belize or Cuba. I think that this team is a very good defensive team and very athletic. In the World Cup, we had a lot of talent but we didn’t have guys that defended very well and from my past experience over the last year, I think that this team will defend very well. I think head coach Bain is very happy with the way we should defend and that is why we believe we are going to pressure the ball a lot and get in their face and force teams to play ‘helter-skelter’ basketball which will benefit us greatly,” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “I don’t think we have much weaknesses,” “We know that over the years our weakness is our ability to shoot the ball. When you look at us adding D’Shon Taylor to the roster, Michael Thompson Jr. who haven’t been able to play for the last two years, both of these guys and Travis Munnings and Michael Carey can shoot the ball pretty well. I think we have improved in that area” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “I know for a fact that this team is a much better defensive team on paper than I have seen in a while. I think that is something that we want to live on to. We believe that once we defend very well that our chances will be great,” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “After 23 years of coaching and now being the president of the Bahamas Basketball, I have always been asked by individuals why wouldn’t I put on a basketball camp. I always thought of doing it for the love and not the money so I decided to put on a camp on the park that I grew up on as a little boy in Garden Hills. This one is for the young people in the Garden Hills community and the surrounding area. Everything is free – camp shirts, lunch, Gatorade and water,” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “You can look at them, they are very happy. They are smiling – they go and tell their friends and that is why we are growing every day. They tell them about the fun they are having at the camp,” External link

Mario Bowleg said : “This shows what we want to do. We’re building on the accomplishments of the previous administration and just getting better,” “I’m just happy that we were able to come out victorious and move on to the next level. I’m looking forward to the 2020 FIBA Americas (under-18) and for us to continue to do better. This is a giant step for basketball in The Bahamas” External link

Coming to assist him after coming home from a long season in the European league is Jaraun ‘Kino’ Burrows. It’s a part of what the federation wants to do, bring basketball back to the community” External link
