Bill Whittaker said ( about Bill Whittaker ) : "does have challenges in recruitment ... with nursing, but also in other specialty health-care disciplines and professional positions”. Waypoint currently has 10 nursing positions open, a combination of part- and full-time. The hospital is also recruiting for personal support worker equivalents patient-care assistants; there are currently 45 positions available. Another obstacle to finding individuals who want to work and live in the region is the lack of housing and affordable rental units, said Whittaker. Adding to the challenge is an aging staff. At GBGH, approximately 35 per cent of the staff is over the age of 50 in all occupations. “Between 50 to 59 is our largest cohort,” Whittaker said. He said another challenge is the increased educational requirements. It now takes a four-year undergraduate degree to become a nurse, up from a two- or three-year college program. A registered practical nurse (RPN) education is now two years, up from one. GBGH doesn’t have a large turnover of its full-time nursing staff, but does for part-time nursing. Whittaker said the hospital has responded by holding nursing fairs, bringing in more nursing students for placements, and providing more training and support for new graduates. In the 2018-19 fiscal year, GBGH hired 61 RNs and 31 RPNs and a total of 182 staff. “So close to 100 of the 182 were in the nursing profession,” Whittaker said. GBGH brings in nursing students from universities and colleges, including Georgian College and Laurentian University. “We are quite proactive in our student program. Hopefully they like it here and come back after their student placement,” he said. Graduating nursing students are in demand, he added. “It’s a seller's market. They’ve got options,” Whittaker said. At Waypoint, the demand for nurses has eased somewhat. “Two recruitment fairs last year helped to significantly reduce these vacancies,” said Hilderley. Waypoint also supports students in a variety of career disciplines, encouraging them to consider health care, she said. Manufacturers and tourist industries aren’t the only ones in north Simcoe having staffing challenges. Hospitals in the region also have “difficulty” in filling all the nursing and health-care disciplines for the 24/7 facilities. “We’ve noticed over the years we’ve had difficulty filling part-time RN positions," External link
