Our target groups in the informal sector include hairdressers associations, market women, transport unions, beauticians associations, among others,"

“When organisations engage stakeholders before the introduction of new programmes or initiatives, it reduces anxiety and suspicion among them. This is particularly important in circumstances where the relationship among employers, labour and SSNIT has not always been exactly cordial,” “After the merger is done, I am optimistic that it will bring down further the average 10 working days it takes SSNIT to process and pay benefits to retirees,”

“Among the lessons learnt is the need for Government and industry to work together in a common effort to enforce the protocols and guidelines for fighting the pandemic. The neglect of any aspect of our shared responsibilities would have a negative and possibly fatal impact on lives. I, therefore, urge you to take the COVID-19 protocols very seriously,”

“I have raised this on several platforms; when you are looking at the sustainability of pensions, when you have a shorter working period, it doesn’t auger well for your pension schemes. When people stay more and work they can accumulate more funds and they are also able to retire on a handsome pension than when their working period is very short. But I must also admit that it has its disadvantages too. Some of the disadvantages include the fact that we live in a country where unemployment is considerable high. More people are leaving school and want to be engaged so if you have some tiered hands still hanging around it would be difficult to recruit new once, it becomes a concern,”

“I don’t have the exact figures for end of 2020, but as at September 2020 the figure the ministry reported on was around three million jobs. I will make the details available to the committee. These jobs are a combination of the public and private sector. I am prepared to defend this number any time,”

“We observed that whiles the pay cuts were rampant in large and medium scale establishments, workers in micro and small scale enterprises suffer most of the job loses,”

“Some employees had to cope with job losses and pay cut for their enterprises to cope with the disruption in the supply chain caused by the pandemic. We have observed that while the pay cut was rampant in large and medium scale establishments, workers in micro and small enterprises suffered most of the job losses. In terms of pay cuts, large and medium scale establishments had to adopt pay cut strategies to keep some workers on their payroll. Generally, the 878 non household establishment surveyed recorded 31.5 percent job losses. In terms of pay cuts, 40 percent of the workers interviewed suffered between less than 10 and more than 50 percent pay cuts to keep their jobs”

“It is important to note that the picture would have been more devastating if the survey was extended to workers in the informal sector where over 80 percent of the workforce is engaged. We concentrated mainly on the formal private sector even though there was some bit of informal sector addition. We took away public sector institutions because the public sector is mainly paid by the government and during the period the government tried to pay all of them. If we had included them the percentages would have come down,”
