Missy Ryan reports : “Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday said he intended to move 1 million Syrian refugees living in Turkey into northern Syria, part of a plan to ease his country’s burden and move Syrian Kurdish forces, which Ankara views as a terrorist threat, away from the Turkish border. Speaking to the House Armed Services Committee alongside Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Esper said the situation in northern Syria had stabilized in recent weeks in areas around a ‘buffer zone’ that Turkey established south of its border. Both Kurdish and U.S. troops were forced to pull back from those areas as Turkish-backed forces moved in” External link

Missy Ryan reports : “According to the internal report, a Twitter account believed to have been used by Ahmed Mohammed al-Shamrani indicates that four religious figures described as radical appear to have shaped the Saudi Air Force trainee’s ‘extremist thought.’ … The Saudi government says it is working with the United States and other allies to determine what motivated the shooter and improve screening procedures for military personnel and students being sent overseas. … The report also put forward information that could explain why his Twitter activity was not previously detected. The account now believed to be Shamrani’s, the report said, did not display his full name, but rather parts of his name that are common in Saudi Arabia, and contained no biographical information or photo” External link

Missy Ryan reports : “Mark Esper, who became acting defense secretary on June 24 after his predecessor, then-acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan, abruptly stepped aside, is expected to hand over to a third acting secretary, Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer, when the White House formally submits Esper’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation. Under a federal law known as the Vacancies Act, Esper, who has been serving as Army secretary since 2017, is required to step aside while the Senate considers his nomination for the top Pentagon job. When he will do so is not clear, as the requirement will be activated only when the White House officially transmits his nomination to the Senate. Pentagon chief of staff Eric Chewning, speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, said the White House was expected to convey Esper’s nomination ‘shortly.’” External link

Missy Ryan reports : “Acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other Pentagon leaders appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee to argue for the creation of Trump’s proposed Space Force. But Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), the Republican committee chairman, asked a question heard throughout the more-than-two-hour hearing: ‘What will [this] organization fix?’ … In the House, Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, has said he does not support the proposal as written, complaining that it is too expensive and too bureaucratic. … He is not alone in that assessment. Even House Republicans are unsatisfied with the administration’s Space Force proposal as presented, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Tex.) told reporters” External link
